Making Memories: Meaningful Ways to Connect with Family This Winter Break
Winter Break Magic: Simple Ways to Connect and Learn
By Keara Holmes
The winter holidays are here, and it’s the perfect time to slow down, reflect, and create meaningful memories with your kids. Here are a few simple ideas to keep the family close, engaged, and learning during the break:
Cherish the Downtime
Life moves fast, so take advantage of the slower pace. I know how tempting it is to ensure your children don’t regress in skills, but they also need breaks. It helps them recharge and learn how to balance their lives appropriately. Cozy up for a family movie night, sip hot cocoa, and let your kids pick their favorite books to read together. Sharing quiet moments builds emotional closeness and helps kids unwind.
Reflect on the Year
Take time as a family to talk about highlights from the past year. What was the best thing they learned at school? What made them feel proud? Create a “memory jar” where everyone writes down their favorite moments and goals for the new year. This encourages gratitude and sets a positive tone for the months ahead.
Explore Educational Fun
Learning doesn’t have to stop during the break! Try simple, fun activities:
- Visit Local Spots: Explore downtown museums, libraries, or historical sites. Many places offer holiday-themed activities.
- Kitchen Chemistry: Bake cookies or make homemade chocolate while sneaking in a lesson about measurements and science.
- Puzzle Power: Work on jigsaw puzzles or play word games together to keep those brains sharp.
Give Back Together
Use the season to teach compassion. Volunteer at a food pantry, make cards for nursing residents or help clean up a local park. These activities create a sense of purpose and togetherness.
Set the Stage for Success
Keep routines loose but consistent–bedtimes, reading before sleep, or even a weekly family game night. These small habits make transitioning back to school easier and help kids avoid falling out of sync.
Winter break is a gift. Use it to laugh, learn, and love as a family. The best lessons often come from these shared moments.
